Nikon D40, D40x and D60 cameras do not have a mechanical drive to focus lenses, so only lenses that contain an electronic focusing motors will work with these cameras. Is sigma serial number imprinted on the lens ? I lost the sale receipt hence I can located serial number. Here is a photo of a Sigma 17-70 I used to own. The Serial number is actually a sticker. Mine was coming off so I glued it back in place. Maybe yours has fallen off too? This photo also shows how the rubberized finish of the lens barrel can peel away with lots of use.
